Découvrez en image les étapes de la restauration d’un très bel « Evangéliaire à l’usage de l’Eglise grecque melkite, pour les dimanches et les fêtes », en langues syriaque (traduction du grec) et arabe (certains titres et les 3 derniers folios). Cet ouvrage dont la reliure est historiquement qualifié de « byzantine », est un des trésors de la Bibliothèque de Deir El Charfet, situé à Daraoun Harissa au Liban. Cette restauration longue et délicate a pu être menée à terme grâce à FACE Charity, UK, que nous remercions chaleureusement pour leur soutien.

Take a visual look at the restoration of a beautiful « Evangeliary for the use of the Melkite Greek Church, for Sundays and Feasts », in Syriac (translation from Greek) and Arabic (some titles and the last 3 folios). The binding, historically described as « Byzantine », is one of the treasures of the Deir El Charfet Library in Daraoun Harissa, Lebanon. This long and delicate restoration was completed thanks to FACE Charity, UK, whose support we warmly thank.

Le colophon nous apprend que le manuscrit a été : « Achevé le 12 kanun second en 7031 AM (1523 AD) de la main du misérable Yuhanna, évêque de Yabrud [Syrie]». Cette ouvrage est une traduction des textes grecs, destinés aux melkites (c’est à dire aux grecques catholiques) de Syrie. La reliure est intéressante à plus d’un titre, car elle regroupe des caractéristiques variées, comme des bâtis de type grec, avec des ais en bois, une couvrure et une couture plutôt byzantine, et à l’intérieur un texte en langue syriaque et arabe accompagné de décors typiques syriaques. Le texte est rédigé à l’encre métalogallique, noire et rouge, sur un papier non filigrané oriental vergé.

The colophon tells us that the manuscript was: « Completed on the 12th Kanun second in 7031 AM (1523 AD) by the hand of the wretched Yuhanna, bishop of Yabrud [Syria] ». This work is a translation of Greek texts, intended for the Melkites (i.e. Greek Catholics) of Syria. The binding is interesting in more ways than one, as it combines a variety of features, such as Greek-style headbands with wooden boards, a rather Byzantine cover and stitching, and inside a text in Syriac and Arabic accompanied by typical Syriac decorations. The text is writtenwith metalogallic, black and red inks on unwatermarked oriental laid paper.

La totalité des feuillets a été nettoyée, consolidée, et réintégrée avec du papier japonais teinté en une ou plusieurs couches.

All the leaves were cleaned, consolidated and reintegrated with tinted Japanese paper, in one or more layers.

La couture d’origine était dans un état extrêmement délicat. Nous avons pu en conserver environ un tiers, que nous avons consolidé et prolongé à l’identique.

The original stitching was in extremely delicate condition. We were able to preserve about a third of it, which we consolidated and extended in identical fashion.

Les bâtis, dont celui de queue était en piètre état, ont été démontés et conservés à part pour permettre la restauration du bloc-texte. Ils ont ensuite été reproduits à l’identique.

The headbands, of which the tail one was in poor condition, were dismantled and stored separately to allow restoration of the text block. They were then reproduced identically.

L’ais inférieur était fendu en deux. La couvrure a donc été entièrement retirée afin de permettre sa consolidation. La couvrure en cuir a été ensuite réintégrée et refixée sur les ais en bois.

The lower board was split in two. The entire cover was therefore removed to allow consolidation. The leather cover was then reintegrated and reattached to the wooden boards.
